Putna Street in Vitebsk got its modern look in the XIX century and was then called Saviour as there was the Saviour Church on this street was. However in 1920, after the October Revolution, the street was renamed – Deputy Street. By the way, even earlier, in the XVIII century, on the street there was a Jewish cemetery and a local landmark – I. Budnikov tile factory. According to the history of Vitebsk, the factory existed a relatively short time – from 1790 to 1812.
Putna Street got its modern name only in 1980. It is named in honour of the corps commander V.K.Putna, who was a famous military figure, and in 1918 was appointed military commissioner of Vitebsk province. In fact, V.K.Putna had a very tragic fate: despite all the merits to the state he was shot in the repressions of 1937.
In due time, from 1961 to 1978, in Putna Street at number nine there was a flat of well-known People's Artist of the Belarussian SSR, actresses of Yakub Kolas Drama Theater Y.K. Glebovskaya. Today in Putna Street there is a bright landmark of Vitebsk – Marc Chagall Art Centre.
